  Building for Life

November 2008

The national standard for well-designed homes and neighbourhoods

2008 award winners

Adelaide Wharf, Hackney, London

Six outstanding housing schemes, ranging from town houses in Brighton to town-centre flats in Stockport, have been recognised with the 2008 Building for Life Awards.

Eighteen more reach BfL standard

A further 18 great housing schemes have been recognised with the Building for Life standard, for demonstrating a commitment to high quality design, good placemaking and sustainable development.

New assessor network

CABE is setting up a national network of 500 accredited assessors to enable new housing schemes to be evaluated against the Building for Life criteria. At least one person will be trained in every English local authority.

Self-assessment an option too

You can also assess your own development using our new assessment exercise cards.

Criteria update

The 20 Building for Life criteria have been re-ordered and simplified to make it easier to assess housing design quality. An updated criteria guide is now available to download.

A thank you to applicants

Many thanks to everyone who submitted a scheme to the 2008 awards. Building for Life is not just about awards: it’s about creating better places. So if your scheme scored well but not enough to achieve a standard, we’ll feed back soon. Those who did receive a standard will also receive a breakdown of their scoring.
